At the age of eight, Beth Harmon is sent to an orphanage. There, she soon discovers her two greatest loves: chess and drugs. She learns chess in the basement, under the watchful eye of a grumpy janitor who quickly recognizes her extraordinary talent. Small green pills are administered to her and other children to help maintain peace in the orphanage.

Both obsessions will accompany Beth as she leaves the orphanage, moves in with an adoptive family, and tries to build a new life for herself. As she climbs to the top of the American and then world chess rankings, she will simultaneously grapple with her own desire for self-destruction.
