Lale Sokolov arrived at Auschwitz in 1942. He was twenty-six years old at the time and spoke several languages. He was supposed to tattoo numbers on the forearms of arriving prisoners, inflicting pain and suffering on them, marking them for life. Thanks to his duties, he enjoyed exceptional freedom in the camp, able to move around with greater freedom than the rest of the inmates. He used this opportunity to help others.
Hundreds of books have been written about Auschwitz. Lale's memoirs are distinguished by the extraordinary courage and fortitude of its protagonist. And by love. One day, a young, terrified girl—Gita—stood in line for a tattoo, and Lale fell in love with her at first sight. It was in the camp that they first spoke, flirted, and kissed. Their love survived the Nazi hell; they married and spent the rest of their lives together.
Lale Sokolov decided to tell his story only after Gita's death. It is a heartbreaking yet uplifting tale.
